Illinois Car Insurance Requirements

Illinois Law requires all motor vehicle owners to have minimum amounts of auto liability insurance. In addition, lending institutions may require physical damage insurance to protect their interests in a financed vehicle.

In the State of Illinois the required minimum coverage for bodily injury is $20,000 per person injured in any one accident and $40,000 for all persons injured in any one accident.

The required minimum coverage for property damage is $15,000 for injury to or the destruction of property of others in any one accident.

Optional insurance may include Uninsured Motorist Coverage. The total amount of this insurance coverage must be equal to the bodily injury liability limits, unless specifically rejected in writing. The amount of Uninsured Motorist coverage may never be less than that which is legally required for Bodily Injury Liability Coverage.

Liability insurance will cover bodily injury (costs stemming from injury or death to pedestrians or to occupants in another vehicle) or property damage (costs stemming from damage to another person’s vehicle or property, i.e., fences, trees and buildings) caused by the policy holder’s negligent operation of the vehicle. Additionally, this coverage may also be used if a member of the policy holder’s family or another person with permission to use the vehicle caused an accident. Legal defense in lawsuits may also be covered under this insurance.

Illinois requires liability limits of 20/40/15 which represent $20,000 for bodily injury coverage per person and $40,000 for bodily injury cover per accident which will pay for medical bills and lost wages. The last number of 15 represents $15,000 for property damage coverage per accident which will pay for repairs and/or replacement of objects damaged or destroyed other than the policy holder’s own vehicle.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and No-Fault Coverage are not required by the state, however, Uninsured (UM) as well as Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UIM) is mandatory. The UM coverage will pay expenses for bodily injuries caused by a hit-and-fun driver or a driver without auto liability insurance who is at fault. The monetary limits here are $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident. UIM coverage will pay the difference between the policy holder’s UIM limits and the liability limits of the driver causing the accident if those limits are lower than UIM. This is required only if the policy holder purchases higher limits of UM coverage.

Collision Coverage as well as Comprehensive Coverage may also be required with regard to actual physical damage.

After a Car Accident, What Do I Do About Medical Bills?

Car Insurance

The first thing to know is that everyone needs to have car insurance. The law requires it in all states except for Wisconsin, New Hampshire, and Florida. Despite the fact that you are not required to have insurance you will wish you did if you are involved in a car accident because with all the costs associated to an accident you can very easily go broke or amass debt. Different states have different rules regarding car insurance. States such as Minnesota, North Dakota, Michigan, Florida and New York are “No-Fault” insurance states. This means that drivers are covered by their own insurance no matter who is at-fault for an accident. Because of this a Personal Injury Protection (PIP) policy is required in these states to cover medical expenses for drivers regardless of who is at fault for an accident.

Who Is Covered?

Generally speaking, car insurance covers the owner of the policy and any trouble they would get into in a car they are driving. It will cover you and your car when you are driving. It generally will cover you and cover the vehicle if you are driving a car that you do not own, but that you have permission to be driving. This may include a rental car or a car you borrow from a friend or family member. If you are a passenger in a vehicle that is in an accident you should be covered by your own insurance in a no-fault state. If you are in an at fault state then the at-fault driver’s insurance will have to pay any medical bills you incur. If you are a passenger in a vehicle involved in an accident then you might also be covered by the insurance of the person whose vehicle you were riding in. If you live in an at-fault state when an accident occurs the insurance for the at-fault driver is responsible for covering costs to both drivers. If you want to add another person to your insurance policy you need to speak to your insurance company about getting them coverage and your rates will increase.

Keep Track of Medical Bills

You will want to keep track of your medical bills and inform your insurance company as soon as possible. In no-fault states your insurance company is required to pay your medical bills. Insurance companies have to pay for any treatment that your doctor says is necessary. If insurance companies aren’t kept up to date on treatments they may try not to pay for them. Therefore it is highly important to keep your insurance company updated on your medical treatment as quickly and as accurately as possible. An insurance company may dispute the validity of a treatment and require you visit their doctor to confirm that the treatment is necessary. Based on the examination they may continue or deny further medical coverage. If your insurance company denies you coverage you need to consult a personal injury attorney as soon as possible to make sure that the insurance company pays your medical costs and that you aren’t stuck paying them out of pocket.

Hiring a Personal Injury Attorney

Following an auto accident insurance companies may hesitate to pay medical costs, if they deny you coverage and you live an a no-fault insurance state, or have a policy with PIP, you should not hesitate to contact an experienced personal injury attorney right away. They will deal with the insurance companies, medical professionals, hospitals and billing agencies to help defer payments until they can settle with the insurance company. This assures that you will have your medical bills covered and that you will be able to pay them in a timely fashion. If you have been in a car accident and have medical bills that need to be covered it can be very beneficial to hire an experienced and dedicated personal injury attorney.

Auto Insurance – How It Works

If you are looking to purchase auto insurance and need to know more about it first, this article deals the terms frequently used in the insurance process and the way in which it works.

Auto insurance or vehicle insurance or car insurance are terms that are used to indicate insurance purchased to protect against car theft, car loss, accidental damage and repair and maintenance in case of injury. The insurance is also meant to cover the liabilities arising our of road accident incidents and could include the driver and third party liabilities as well.

Auto insurance is a mandatory purchase before a vehicle is driven on the roads. The public jurisdictions in various countries define the rules for road traffic and determine the extent and value of insurance covered by them.  The governing bodies in various states and jurisdictions lay down the need to apply for auto insurance as soon as a person buys any vehicle and takes it on the road. This means that the insurance needs to be bought even before the car leaves the car dealer showroom. Most dealerships see to this along with the taxes and other documentations that are required for the vehicle.

The auto insurance works on the principle that the car owner will pay a certain stipulated sum towards car repairs every time they claim the amounts under insurance. This is primarily done to bring in a genuine integrity to the system. The insurance products are based on two simple variables, the cost of the insured vehicle and the performance of the vehicle. Other factors like age and gender of the driver, the road conditions and even local state laws in which the vehicle will normally move influence the premium rates.

The purchase price of the vehicle leads to easy classification of vehicles as luxury or basic vehicles. The primary premium will be higher for a high end premium segment car because the replacement and repair costs of such vehicles are more expensive. The performance of the vehicle often influences the driving behavior. A car with higher horse power and racing performance is best enjoyed at high speed, which could translate to risky driving and hence more accident probabilities. Insurance companies evaluate all of this while shaping and defining their product.

Auto insurance is available in various formats like comprehensive insurance, which covers all kinds of damages and liabilities to the driver and third parties present, or third party insurance which protects the loss of life of third parties due to negligence of the driver or any other reasons. There are full loss and partial loss variants available in the insurance segment as well.

Most auto insurance terms expire after a year and it is important to renew insurance policies every year to stay concurrent and compliant with the public jurisdiction and also to safeguard your own interests.

Conclusion: Auto insurance is a necessity for all car owners and the product variants in this segment can offer insurance for all needs. To find out which one suits your needs best, you should read up on the various policies available and then decide which is best after comparing premiums and benefits.

Auto Insurance

Auto insurance can make all of the difference in the world in the unfortunate event of an accident. Not only does it cover property damage, but auto insurance offers other protections as well.

For example, liability coverage will cover damage you cause to other vehicles in an accident, and it can also cover others’ medical expenses.

The type of policy you have will determine the dollar amount of coverage you receive in these areas. The cost of the policy will be affected by the level of protection you buy, and other factors such as your age, and driving record.

Given the importance of auto insurance, it’s a good idea to shop carefully when looking for appropriate coverage.

The policy itself is a contract that specifies your obligations, as well as the financial commitment of the insurer. The amount you pay for a set term of coverage is called the premium. Generally the premium of your auto insurance is fixed for the term of the policy barring unforeseen events, such as an accident.

State requirements for auto insurance vary from state to state and from individual to individual. Speaking to an insurance professional will help you make a decision based on your particular needs.

The premium for auto insurance is directly connected to 6 levels of coverage. These levels include comprehensive, collision, uninsured/underinsured motorist, property damage liability, bodily injury liability, and medical payments (also known as personal injury protection).

Comprehensive protection covers losses that are not a direct result of an accident. For example, comprehensive would come in handy if you sustained damage to your car due to a hailstorm.

Some drivers choose not to carry comprehensive, especially if they are driving an older vehicle of little monetary value. Also the deductible (the portion of an expense you pay out of pocket)may exceed the value of some older cars.

On the other hand, if you purchase a new car, especially with a loan, you may need to incorporate comprehensive in your policy.

Collision coverage appropriately covers your automobile in the event of a collision. This protection covers damage even if it’s determined you’re at fault in the accident. The cost of collision coverage will be affected by the deductible. Generally speaking, the higher your deductible the lower the premium for your auto insurance.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage covers you in the event that you are in an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver. This protects you as well as any other designated driver of your car. This coverage can be invaluable if you sustain significant injury. This type of coverage may also cover you if you are a pedestrian and a driver hits you.

Property damage liability covers damages you cause to another vehicle. It also covers damages you might cause to other property. If for example, you take out the neighbor’s fence going around a corner, property damage liability coverage will cover this.

Bodily injury liability coverage is particularly important. This helps protect you financially in the event that you cause an accident and cause injury to other people.

Medical payments coverage (personal injury protection) is a type of coverage that protects you and the occupants of your car for medical related expenses.

Auto insurance will help you and those you love if a mishap occurs. Finding the right auto insurance policy will help make your driving experience safer and more pleasurable.

Auto Insurance – Do Red Cars Cost More to Insure?

Ever wonder why some vehicles cost more to insure on your insurance policy than others? Many times you don’t find out that the new car you just purchased is going to cost more to insure until it’s already sitting in your driveway. Read on so you’ll never be surprised again!

Here’s the insider’s scoop…an independent company rates vehicles on a number of different factors such as construction materials, likelihood of theft losses, cost, etc. and assigns a rating symbol number. These numbers typically range from 02 – 27.

All you need to know for our purposes here, is a higher rating symbol will have a higher insurance premium than one with a lower symbol.

Take a look at these examples:

2008 Mercury Mariner 4×2, symbol 07 = $359/six months
(ex. also 2008 Toyota Yaris hatchback, 2008 Chryser Town & Country LX)

2008 Ford Fusion SE 4cyl, symbol 13 = $417/six months
(ex. also 2008 Chrysler Pacifica AWD, 2008 Toyota Camry LE)

2008 Cadillac CTS AWD, symbol 21 = $565/six months
(ex. also 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab, 2008 Chevy Corvette Z06)

2008 BMW 650i Coupe, symbol 26 = $716/six months
(ex. also 2008 Mercedes GL 4matic AWD, 2008 Lexus LS460)

In these examples the driver is the same and the coverage is the same. The only difference is the vehicle symbol.

Eye opening, right?!!

The next logical question is:

“How am I supposed to know what symbol my vehicle is, or the one I’m looking to buy?”

The declarations page of your current auto insurance policy will typically list each vehicles’ symbol (go ahead, dust it off and take a look). And for new vehicles, just give your Ann Arbor insurance agent a call.

P.S. Give the same vehicle and model, color does not affect the insurance premium. So, the answer to our original question, “Do red car cars cost more to insure?” No, they do not cost more given the same vehicle and driver.

Ever Wondered What An Auto Insurance Claim Adjuster Does?

An auto insurance claim adjuster works for the insurance company with whom you purchase a policy. Some insurance companies use independent adjusters so that they get an unbiased report. When you have an accident and make a claim on your insurance, the company will send out an adjuster to access the damages and come up with an amount of money that will be needed to complete the repairs. The auto insurance claim adjuster has to contact the garages to get an estimate of what the parts and labor will cost.

When you report a claim for an accident to your auto insurance, they will contact the appropriate adjuster. The auto insurance adjuster assigned to your case will contact you to get the details on where he/she can assess the vehicle. Then you will receive a report from the insurance company regarding the assessment the auto insurance claim adjuster submits. If the damages exceed the value of the vehicle, it will be “written off”.

The amount you get on your auto insurance policy depends on the policy itself. If the auto insurance claim adjuster determines that the vehicle is written off, the insurance will pay you the book value of the vehicle. This could be more or less than what the car is worth. With some auto insurance policies, you can pay extra to have a clause included stating that if the vehicle is written off within the first two years, you get the full amount that you paid for the automobile.

There is a certain process that an auto insurance claim adjuster has to use to come up with the amount the insurance company will pay. You will usually get two quotes – one that will see the car getting repaired at a top of the line garage and another if you take a cash settlement on the claim and get the work done yourself. The auto insurance adjuster knows that many people have friends who can do the work cheaper and often take the money.

Once you decide how you want to proceed, the insurance company will issue a check. If you are paying on the vehicle, the check will be made out jointly to you and the lender. Otherwise the check comes directly to you. The job of the auto insurance adjuster is only to access the damages, Any dispute you have regarding the report made by the auto insurance claim adjuster has to be done through the insurance company. Keep this in mind because the adjuster is only an ordinary person like yourself trying to make a living.

An auto insurance claim adjuster doesn’t have an easy job.

Auto Insurance

Auto insurance is the policy that protects a vehicle owner or user from liabilities that arises from the possession and usage of the vehicle.

Auto insurance covers a lot of area. Some of them are:

o Comprehensive Insurance: This coverage offers protection for damage to the car that was not caused by accident. These include fire, theft, animals, natural disaster and others, apart from things that are on the exclusion list.

o Collision: This is the coverage that protects you when your car is damaged in an accident and you are at fault. It would pay the expenses for the repair of your vehicle. A car is declared “A write off” or “total loss” if the cost of repair is more than the market value. So what they would do in such a case would be to pay the actual value of the car, minus deductible and then the car would be auctioned off to be used as scrap.

o Liability insurance: This is the minimum required in most states. It covers the payment for expenses incurred if you’re found at fault in an accident. The coverage would pay for medical bills for bodily injury and repair of damage to property of the third party. Some times the cost of the repairs and medical bills maybe way higher than the limits of this coverage. That is why it is wise to have more than the liability coverage.

o Actual cash value: This is paid when the vehicle is destroyed or damaged. The actual cash value is calculated by subtracting the depreciation from the replacement cost.

o Replacement cost: This is the amount it would cost to replace the vehicle in case of damage or destruction, without considering the depreciation cost.

o Depreciation: This is the value of the vehicle as it is affected by wear and tear and age.

In all the 55 states, it is illegal to operate a vehicle without insurance. Because of this, most people just buy the most basic of all the policies in order to save cost. Instead of doing this, I suggest that you take out a little extra time and shop extensively online. Check out quotes from different insurance companies, compare their prices and at the end of your research you’ll be pleased to find out that you did not really need to under insure your vehicle to save cost.
